Nestled between Central Ave and 7th St, on the north side of Camelback road sits one of the most northerly historic districts in Arizona. Windsor square is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in all of North Central Phoenix. Ironically, Windsor square is actually made up of circular streets; going against the typical grid system Phoenix has to offer.
There are approximately 260 homes that make up the Windsor Square historic district. The community was built in 1929, making it one of the older communities around. When the community was built the population of Phoenix was around just 70,000! This was truly a far out suburb at the time. The rail system in downtown Phoenix came as far north as Thomas Rd, which is several miles from this community. Homes were built all the way through the early 1950’s so the architecture spans several decades.
Fast forward to 1996, the district was officially added to the Phoenix Historic Property Register. Since then, popularity has increased tremendously. Now centrally located in Phoenix it remains a nice quiet neighborhood with access to all the best amenities Phoenix has to offer. Windsor Square is a food lover’s dream community with such Central Phoenix favorites such as Postino Central, St Francis, and the appropriately named Windsor restaurant.
Around the corner a redevelopment of the Uptown plaza brings in AJs grocery store, Shake Shack and Flower Child restaurant. With close proximity to the new Phoenix light rail, you can truly live without a car in this area. Although few residents actually do, bicycles and walking to your favorite restaurant or watering hole is absolutely an option.
Windsor Square is in the highly desirable Madison school district. It’s no wonder young families looking for a centrally located community settle in nicely to the Winsor Square historic District.
